Jang, Yeong-Sil

Jang, Yeong-Sil (장영실) was a fifteenth century Korean scientist and astronomer during the Joseon Dynasty. Although Jang was born into the servant/slave class (Cheonmin), King Sejong's new policy of breaking class barriers during the Joseon Dynasty allowed Jang to be recruited into the national civil service and to work at the royal place. Jang's inventions, such as the rain gauge (called Cheokugye), water gauge, highlighted the technological advancements of the Joseon Dynasty.

    1. Hello,

Thanks for your inquiry. That statue is located at KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) in Daedeok Innopolis, Daejeon, South Korea.
      Here is the website: https://www.kaist.ac.kr/en/

If you would like to learn more about his work, I suggest that you visit the National Science Museum located in Daejeon (same city: it is not far away from KAIST): https://www.science.go.kr/

Also, here is the museum specifically for Jang, Young Sil: http://www.jyssm.co.kr/

I hope the aforementioned info is helpful.
